Ranking Algorithm

Information on the ranking algorithm used in the Top 100 blogs list.

At the 14th March 2008 update of the list you might have noticed a large change in the rankings for some sites, big falls and big rises in the rankings.

Basically I’ve experimented with various different ways of ranking the blogs, always trying to get the fairest results, and on 14th March I changed the system again, this time I hope for the last time.

Previously Google Page Rank had almost no influence on the scores, for two reasons

• it’s not really a very useful way of measuring a site
• for mathematical reasons it can have too big an influence on the scores

But I decided to increase its share in the algorithm and now if your Page Rank is quite low, like 0, 1, 2, or even 3, it will be very difficult for your blog to rank highly, unless your’e Dian Sastrowardoyo.

So, for the algorithm, Page Rank still has the lowest share in determining the rankings (but for mathematical reasons it is still very important), and the other five factors are about equal.

Update 29th March

Page Rank influence turned down slightly (done retrospectively to update the 14th March results), but is still higher than it was pre-14th March. RSS Subscribers influence turned slightly up.

4th April

Not an update, just a minor algorithm change, Del.icio.us influence turned down a little.

1st May

Alexa Traffic Rank became much more influential in the rankings this time.
Next update in early June.

June 1st

Incredibly smooth update! Del.ciou.us even stopped banning my IP!

July 1st

Talked too soon, big mess this time, but eventually finished ok. I’m trying to reduce the influence of Backlinks combined with Technorati rank, there are some sites that have got tons of network type links, and it isn’t really fair. There are also a couple of sites that are spamming Technorati hard, and will have to be removed next update, or earlier.

August 1st

Influence of Technorati and Backlinks turned down.

September

No update, problems.

October

Late but done.

December 2009

Starting regular updates again. Bloglines checking replaced with Feedburner. Added Backtweets checking. Technorati still not available.

Dec. 21st. Scoring method changed, lot more logical and fair now.

March 2010

Sistem rangkingnya mengalami perubahan besar, dengan tujuan membuat Top 100 lebih dynamis dan real time, dan juga lebih menarik.

Setelah ini ada kumungkinan rangking blog masing-masing akan bisa naik/turun tajam dalam waktu pendek.

Untuk meningkat rankgingnya saya sarankan untuk posting sesering mungkin dan kasih perhatian kepada orang yang memberi komentar.

   I’m not that interested in rankings , but I am interested to know why I lost the top ranking to Fatih a few updates ago and have now ‘won’ it back again.

   As my score is about the same, what did he do wrong?

    Di Top 100 ada tulisan kan “Technorati currently not available”? Berarti Technorati tidak bisa diakses secara automatis, kalau secara manual tidak bisa juga untuk blog bhs indonesia, seperti blog Iman sendiri.

    Saya setuju Technorati tidak perlu dimasukkan sebagai kriteria pemeringkatan, pasti Anda sendiri tahu alasannya.
    Kalau boleh usul:
    1. Update bisa lebih sering, tidak harus per bulan mungkin bisa per minggu.
    2. Jika secara teknis memungkinkan. FaceBook dan NetworkedBlogs bisa dipertimbangkan sebagai kriteria baru. Tampaknya inilah trend komunitas dunia maya kita saat ini.

    Akhmad, di sini sudah ada update tiap minggu, biasanya hari Minggu, kalau akses data dari Facebook belum bisa karna facebook belum bolehkan seperti itu, kalau Networked Blogs saya selidiki dulu…

    hmmm.. setelah saya liat-liat, ternyata twitter backtweets itu databasenya cuma beberapa bulan yah, jadi ga terkumulatif angkanya..
    sama seperti postrank yang berubah2 yah?

    Yes, kalau postrank hitung 30 hari sebelumnya, backtweets kira kira sama, yang kumulatif hanya Delicious.

    tiak terduga saya bisa naik peringkat tiga padahal saya tidak tahu bagaimana cara rankingnya seakan tidak percaya bisa iperingkat itu sebelumnya statis di 8

    Selamat untuk rekan-rekan yang telah sukses mendapat kenaikan peringkat yang siginifikan.
    Sementara blog saya hingga saat masih bolak-balik di antara peringkat 58 – 60,
    Barangkali ada saran dan resep jitu agar peringkat blog saya bisa lebih baik lagi.
    Karena dari beberapa situs agregat yang saya ikuti, di IndonesiaMatter inilah peringkat yang paling rendah. Kriterianya mungkin tergolong rumit, tetapi paling mengasyikkan dan memiliki tantangan tersendiri.
